Aug 31, 2009: DAM Best of the Fest Back by Popular Demand

Newark Film Festival

For the second year, the Newark Film Festival is showing the DAM Best of the Fest at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, DE. This year’s audience favorites include several family films.

"It's hard to find family-friendly movies in the independent film world, but we have several this year that have been popular with the kids: Wiener Takes All, is a tongue-in-cheek mockmentary about the horrible practice of giving steroids to wiener dogs so they win races; Afghan Star, is about children in Afghanistan trying to win an American Idol-style competition; and Horse Boy, is a story about a father who tries to help his son with autism," declares Barry Schlecker, founder and producer of the Newark Film Festival.

There is a special screening of Wiener Takes All designed to be more friendly to families who have children with autism. The movie will be shown with the lights on and the music low at 10 AM, Saturday, September 26, and is supported by Autism Delaware.

A spokesperson from Autism Delaware states, “The Newark Film Festival has given kids the opportunity to see a movie by adapting to their needs. They've made the theater a safe environment for the parents to take their kids in and out if they need to. We really appreciate that the Newark Film Festival is providing a safe place for our families to discover and enjoy these films."

Representative Thomas Kovach says, "I am thrilled to able to provide access to the arts to children in Edgemoor, whose Edgemoor Resource House provides kids with a secure study location. Seeing a movie like Afghan Star provides a window into a different culture from a singing competition standpoint."

Barry added, "I was surprised that Horse Boy turned out to be a sleeper hit of the festival. I received more emails and letters thanking me for showing that film than any other; it's a truly amazing film."

Tickets to these crowd favorites are selling quickly and can be purchased at www.newarkfilm.com, where you can see the complete weekend schedule.
